Brutalist Chess Set
Spring 2024
Design Intent
Materiality and a consistent Family of Form were the goals of the chess set. The focus was to create an Aesthetically Pleasing form while maintaining a cohesive Family of Form in the design. How the Materials behaved was essential to the learning processes in Creating the design.

3-D Prototyping
The majority of my time was spent on the physical Ideation to create Cohesion of the set. After my first print I knew the Elegance of the queen had to be Extended throughout the rest of the Pieces.
Priming and Creating Molds
I primed the 3-D Printed models by coating them in a layer of Wood Filler then sprayed them with sand-able Car Paint Primer and Sanded them till they were Smooth.
Casting
During Casting, my forms were Expanding and the pieces were Losing Form. I used an Even Distribution of Pressure across the Mold with two thin sheets of wood and Clamps to correct the issue. With this strategy I was able to get perfect Casts.
Final Models
For Contrast of Materiality, I added thin Brass Bands to the pieces to enhance the Family of Form of the set.
